SHIONOGI's Challenge in Establishing an Enterprise-Wide Master Data Management Framework
At SHIONOGI, we are advancing our "CDM (Central Data Management) Initiative" to consolidate dispersed data across the organization and enable efficient data utilization. As a key component of this initiative, we are promoting MDM (Master Data Management) that spans across business domains, aiming not only to strengthen collaboration between functional areas but also to enable sophisticated management decision-making through data analysis leveraging master data as analytical axes.
The Future Vision Enabled by Master Data Management
There are three primary objectives for managing master data through the MDM system: enhancing data governance through master data management on a common platform, improving data quality by applying master data management rules, and promoting data utilization through the use of enterprise-wide common master data across business domains. To achieve these three objectives, we are progressively consolidating master data scattered throughout the organization into the MDM system.
In May 2024, in parallel with the renewal of our sales domain systems, we initiated the implementation of the MDM system and the organization of master data, and commenced full-scale operations one year later in May 2025. We constructed the product master, organizational master, business office master, and business day master required for sales domain systems, taking our first step toward establishing an enterprise-wide MDM framework.
As our next step, we are planning to construct enterprise-common item master, business partner master, and activity master. Currently, systems and data are managed individually within each business domain, requiring manual data preparation by staff members to share data between departments. Therefore, we will centrally manage enterprise-common master data through the MDM system and combine it with transactional data (operational data such as sales, sales volume, and costs) to establish an environment where data analysis can be performed with accurate data in real-time.
Example: As-Is / To-Be of Product Master Management and Data Visualization
In parallel with consolidating master data into the MDM system, we are advancing the establishment of an MDM framework. We are formulating MDM policies as a data governance function to manage master data accurately, enabling seamless master data collaboration and utilization across business domains. We aim first to establish stable domestic operations, with plans for global expansion beginning in fiscal year 2026. We are also examining what data is necessary for global decision-making and what master data needs to be managed and how.
