Horizontal recycling technology for label mounts wins four awards

Horizontal recycling technology for label mounts was created through the Resource Recycling Project, a joint resource recycling alliance run by six companies: Shionogi Pharma Co., Ltd., NEION Film Coatings Corporation, TOYOBO Co., Ltd., Toppan Infomedia Co., Ltd., Mitsui Bussan Chemicals Co., Ltd., and Yamato Box Charter Co., Ltd. This technology has won four awards: “Appropriate Packaging Award” at the Japan Packaging Contest 2023, “Outstanding Performance Award” at the 6th EcoPro Awards, “AsiaStar 2023 Award (Eco-Package category),” and “Excellent Award” at the 51st Minister of the Environment Awards.

Horizontal recycling technology for label mounts involves switching label mounts used in product packaging to PET-based synthetic paper, which is recyclable, and collecting used mounts after the packaging process to reuse them as label mounts, thereby reducing the amount of mounts discarded to zero. The companies participating in the Resource Recycling Project worked together to tackle horizontal recycling of label mounts—something that had not previously been achieved by individual companies—to accelerate innovation, and completed the entire process of the recycling scheme, from the artery (the side that produces products) to the vein (the side that collects and reuses waste materials), within the project. This was recognized and led to the award.

Shionogi Pharma applies this technology to labels for ampoule injections and packaging boxes, thereby contributing to the continuous reduction of industrial waste materials and CO2 emissions.
