General environmental initiatives

The Eco-First Program aimed at enhancing efforts by the business sector to tackle environmental challenges. Under this program, the Minister of the Environment, Japan certifies companies those are demonstrating "advanced, unique, and industry-leading business initiatives" as "Eco-First companies".

SHIONOGI is the inaugural pharmaceutical company to receive the "Eco-First company" certification. Additionally, SHIONOGI is a member of the Eco-First Promotion Council, comprised of companies that have been certified as Eco-First companies.

The environmental committee of the federation of pharmaceutical manufacturers' association of Japan informs member organizations about environmental issues and measures within the pharmaceutical industry. SHIONOGI is a member of the voluntary action plan for the creation of a recycling-based society working group, a sub-organization of the environmental committee.

SHIONOGI participates in the environmental issue committee of the Japan pharmaceutical manufacturers association, which is comprised of research and development-focused pharmaceutical companies, as well as the carbon neutral group, a sub-organization of the environmental issue committee, to conduct discussions on addressing challenges in the pharmaceutical industry related to the environment.

Climate change initiatives

The SBTi is an international collaboration that assists companies in establishing science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets to align with the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global average temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. SHIONOGI has set SBT as its greenhouse gas emission reduction target for fiscal year 2030, with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. In June 2021, SHIONOGI was certified by the SBTi.

In 2022, SHIONOGI announced its support for the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations and became a member of the TCFD Consortium. We have developed a climate change strategy based on the TCFD framework and shared it on our website.

The Japan Climate Initiative (JCI) is a network focused on achieving a decarbonized society through enhanced information sharing and dialogue among companies, local governments, NGOs, and others committed to addressing climate change in Japan. SHIONOGI joined JCI in April 2021 and has endorsed all messages and recommendations that JCI has conveyed to the Japanese government.

JH2A is an organization dedicated to addressing the challenges of integrating hydrogen, a clean energy source, into society and fostering a hydrogen economy that is sustainable for both people and the environment. SHIONOGI has been a member of JH2A since 2023 and is actively involved in its initiatives.

Antimicrobial Resistance Initiatives

The AMR Industry Alliance is made up of private companies working together to offer sustainable solutions to combat AMR. Over 100 research and development-focused pharmaceutical companies, generic drug companies, biotechnology companies, diagnostic drug companies, and various associations are involved. SHIONOGI has been engaged in this initiative since its inception, being one of the 12 companies that signed the "AMR Industry Roadmap" at the Davos Conference in September 2016, which led to the formation of the AMR Industry Alliance.

Biodiversity initiatives

The "30by30 target" aims to protect or conserve at least 30% of land and sea areas as healthy ecosystems by 2030. In September 2023, SHIONOGI endorsed the target's mission to "advance efforts towards meeting the international target of the 30by30 target" and joined the "30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity," a voluntary initiative involving companies, local governments, and organizations.

The Japan Business Federation (Keidanren) is committed to promoting and implementing the Keidanren Declaration for Biodiversity and Guidelines to achieve a society of coexistence with nature and a sustainable economic society. They have also declared their commitment to contributing to the achievement of global goals such as the GBF (Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework), SDGs, as well as Japan's national strategy including 30by30. SHIONOGI has endorsed the Declaration of Biodiversity by Keidanren and Action Policy (Revised Edition) and has announced its environmental policy for the future and specific examples of environmental initiatives through the Keidanren Initiative for Biodiversity Conservation.
